Seeing Familiar Faces in Headlights and Grills of Classic Cars

Portland photographer William Anthony shot 32 cars for America’s Car Museum in Tacoma, Washington, that show a softer side of the museum’s collection, which spans a century of auto making. His low-angle, low-light shots seem to isolate amused, dopey, and sinister faces that, he says, humans are hardwired to recognize. “It’s a chicken-and-the-egg sort of thing,” Anthony says. “Do we see faces because of how we are, or did they design the cars that way?”
